Drug intelligence / Profile preview
[18F]VM4-037 is a fluorine-18 labeled radiopharmaceutical developed as a positron emission tomography (PET) imaging tracer. It is a small molecule sulfonamide-based compound that specifically targets Carbonic Anhydrase IX (CAIX), a cell-surface protein that is significantly upregulated under hypoxic conditions in various solid tumors, most notably in renal cell carcinoma. By binding to CAIX, [18F]VM4-037 serves as a non-invasive surrogate marker for tissue hypoxia, which is often associated with tumor aggressiveness, poor prognosis, and resistance to conventional therapies. While clinical trials have evaluated its efficacy in imaging stage 4 solid tumors, its utility can be limited by high physiological uptake in the liver and kidneys, which may obscure tumor-specific signals in those regions.
